Munoz featured in Pharma’s Almanac

Feb 22, 2023

CRB’s plasma derived therapies market sector lead, Eddie Munoz, recently participated in a roundtable with Pharma’s Almanac. Industry leaders looked to the future of the international pharmaceutical and biotech markets to provide their unique insights for the article, “In what international markets do you anticipate significant developments in the near future?”

Focusing on his area of expertise, Munoz points to the needs of plasma therapy production, examining demand growth and a fragile supply chain.

“The global plasma-derived therapies (PDTs) market is on the rebound and expected to see significant growth in the coming years — and all eyes are on the European plasma market. ”

While demand continues to grow, the global PDT supply chain has several pinch points:

  • Donar reliant
  • Heavy donor restrictions in other countries
  • Many countries rely on the U.S. for their source plasma
“Europe has become reliant on the United States to meet the patient need for PDTs. That need is projected to continue seeing steady growth for the foreseeable future, and, if European countries do nothing to increase plasma collections and PDT production, the deficit between supply and demand and reliance on the United States will continue to grow with it.”

European countries are actively working to strengthen their PDT supply chain through advocacy and legislation. As they do so, the world’s PDT manufacturers will be watching every step of the way.
