John Rubero

Senior Fellow - Purification Bioprocess

San Diego, CA

John has maintained a focus on downstream purification of therapeutic proteins for his entire career, beginning with purification of cytokines and cytokine receptors. John began his career in process development, before transitioning to clinical manufacturing, where he was responsible for CGMP compliance. Since the late 1990’s, he has been involved primarily in preparative-scale equipment design for production of monoclonal antibodies and fusion proteins, with emphasis on custom Liquid Chromatography, In-line Dilution, and Tangential Flow Ultrafiltration systems. Most of John’s experience pertains to large stainless-steel facilities in the U.S. and Europe. As a Senior Fellow at CRB, John is focused on mentoring young engineers on fundamental principles of downstream bioprocessing, especially those associated with liquid chromatography.

“My career in the biopharmaceutical industry has always been interesting, because of the seemingly endless opportunities to innovate, solve new problems, troubleshoot in the field, and learn from other experts. I’m a small picture person, interested mainly in the detail work necessary to ensure that creative design solutions also meet the standard of robustness required in a biomanufacturing setting. Currently, I find a lot of intrigue in the rapid advancement we are seeing around continuous chromatography and process intensification.”
