Wegner discusses zero-carbon in BioPharm International eBook
Dec 5, 2023
The biopharma industry has made strong sustainability commitments to carbon, energy, waste, and water, but how can these commitments be fulfilled in such a resource-heavy industry? CRB’s Fellow of Energy and Sustainability, Jeff Wegner, digs into the logistics and benefits of implementing sustainable strategies in the recent BioPharm International eBook, “Sustainability using zero-carbon biopharma facilities.”
When incorporated in early planning, zero-carbon facilities consume less energy, are resilient against rising utility costs, and contribute to the well-being of employees. While many folks believe that sustainability equates to higher costs, Wegner suggests that is not necessarily true when the vision and planning are properly aligned. Zero-carbon facilities, even in biopharma, can be economically viable, especially when addressing challenges related to heating systems and incorporating onsite renewables like solar photovoltaics and battery energy storage.
Sustainability is multi-faceted, though, and does not just fall to reducing energy use or switching to solar. Sustainability could span any of the three ESG pillars of environmental, social or governance. It is important to plan sustainable facilities in accordance with a manufacturer’s corporate goals, regional resource priorities, and site-level constraints.
Beyond new sites, the article explores challenges and strategies for achieving zero carbon at existing operating facilities, emphasizing the significance of a sustainability master plan or roadmap for guiding the conversion process.
