Jochen Schmidt-Nawrot

Jochen Schmidt-Nawrot is a recognized thought leader in ultrapure water systems for the pharmaceutical industry, with over 30 years of experience in the design and implementation of high-purity water systems. He brings deep technical expertise across all process stages and is capable of fully designing each unit operation. His work is grounded in a detailed understanding of pharmaceutical regulatory requirements and a strong commitment to improving Water for Injection (WFI) quality for the benefit of the patient.

Jochen is passionate about translating end user needs into technically and economically optimized water system designs. A key focus of his work lies in reducing the carbon footprint of clean utility systems—for example, by replacing energy-intensive distillation with membrane-based WFI generation. He has realized projects with advanced heat recovery concepts that set new sustainability benchmarks in the industry.

He is an active member of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) and serves as Secretary on its global Steering Committee for Critical Utilities. He is co-author of the ISPE Good Practice Guides for Membrane-Based WFI Generation and Ozone Sanitization, and is currently contributing to a new guide on Sustainability of Clean Utilities. Jochen is also a member of ISPE-DACH’s Regional Community of Practice (rCoP) for Water and Steam, and of the VDI Expert Committee for Cleanroom Technology.

Jochen holds a Dipl.-Ing. degree in Process Engineering from Stuttgart University, earned in 1995. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and training events, and has authored numerous publications. He serves as a lecturer at the University of Albstadt-Sigmaringen since 2014. In 2022, he presented on critical utilities at ISPE DACH & NORDIC in Frankfurt, and in 2024, he spoke at the ISPE Aseptic Conference in Vienna and the ISPE NORDIC Critical Utilities Conference in Copenhagen, highlighting sustainability innovations in pharmaceutical water systems.
