“I want it all, and I want it now,” a study on the future of filling

One constant in the pharmaceutical industry is innovation, which leads to continuous evolution of manufacturing needs. To illustrate this point, the industry is hyping an all-encompassing flexible fill line as the Swiss Army knife for the filling industry. Similar to the all-in-one tool issued to Swiss troops that can save your life with one end and open a can with the other, these lines combine the activities of what would traditionally be three separate filling lines into one line under barrier isolation in a single filling suite. These lines are gaining a lot of attention for obvious reasons.

How has this Swiss Army knife affected the industry? Are there downsides to the highly touted flexible, faster and more efficient lines?
